What "Fragrance" Actually Means on a Label, and Why the Industry Won't Tell You.

Under the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act, cosmetic companies are required to list their ingredients so consumers can make informed choices. But the same law carves out an exception for anything considered a trade secret, and fragrance and flavor formulas are treated as the ingredients most likely to qualify. Instead of disclosure, a manufacturer is permitted to write one word: "Fragrance," or "Parfum."

That single word can legally represent a proprietary blend of up to several thousand possible aroma chemicals, and the company is under no obligation to tell you which ones, or how many, or even how it made it into your bottle.

You may not know that even a product labeled "unscented" isn't necessarily free of fragrance ingredients. Sometimes a small amount is added simply to mask the smell of other raw materials, without creating a scent you'd notice.

It's a regulatory gap that has existed for decades, built to protect a perfumer's formula the same way a recipe might be protected. The cost of that protection is paid by the person wearing the product, and those around them who are exposed to the off gas of the chemicals, neither who has any way to know what they're actually being exposed to. 

Why "Clean Label" Isn't the Same as Clean

The complication doesn’t go away just because you move past a plain synthetic fragrance and into the "clean fragrance" category. Bottles proudly declare themselves free of parabens and phthalates, and that's not nothing. Some phthalates have been studied for their potential to disrupt hormone function, and removing them is a reasonable thing to want.

But "free of parabens and phthalates" is not the same claim as "made of ingredients your body recognizes." A lab developed fragrance can remove those two specific chemical families and still be built almost entirely from synthetic aroma isolates: lab-created molecules engineered to imitate a note (a rose, an amber, a musk) without containing any of the botanical complexity the real thing carries.

These "clean" synthetics are still isolates. They're still designed to override natural olfactory signaling rather than participate in it. Formulators researching fragranced consumer products have found that even products marketed without well-known endocrine disruptors like phthalates sometimes substitute in other, less-studied compounds. It often just means the science hasn't caught up.

In other words: paraben-free and phthalate-free tells you what a fragrance doesn't contain. It tells you almost nothing about what it does.

Why This Matters More Than Marketing

Your olfactory system isn’t an air doctor blocking harmful molecules from entering. Scent molecules travel directly into the limbic system, the part of the brain governing memory, emotion, and stress regulation, with no filtration checkpoint in between. Whatever is in that bottle reaches your brain immediately, whether it's a single-ingredient essential oil or a cocktail of synthetic isolates hidden behind one word.

This is why we hesitate at even utilizing the go-to "clean" label at Alabaster. We build from single-ingredient essential oils and organic botanicals, ingredients we can name individually because there's nothing to protect from disclosure. There is no trade secret to defend. What we offer is what nature already provided, we aim to restore the way fragrance was always meant to be worn.

What Alabaster Does Differently

Every Alabaster fragrance is built entirely from essential oils, layered and balanced until the scent is complete. There's no synthetic aroma isolate rounding out the profile and no "clean" lab-made compound stretching the formula further. The oils are the formula.

That also means no fixatives. Fixatives are the ingredients most fragrances rely on to slow evaporation and make a scent last longer on the skin, and they're almost always synthetic, whether or not the rest of the formula claims to be clean. Without one, a fragrance evolves and fades the way real botanical scent naturally does. With one, a scent is chemically held in place, which is part of why so many "clean" fragrances still lean on synthetic chemistry even after removing parabens and phthalates. Skipping the fixative means skipping an additional entire category of hidden synthetic ingredients. It does mean applying the fragrance more often but when essential oils are used, they come with health benefits that synthetics do not. We do not see application throughout the day as anything but leaning into nature for the benefits she intended from the beginning. 

Fragrance developed this way doesn't just smell like the original design. It behaves like it, too, carrying the mood and health benefits that come from working with your body instead of against it.
